On March 5th 2026 the 2040 climate goal was adopted and has been described by Ursula von der Leyen as ”a clear direction of travel towards climate neutrality” and ”a pragmatic and realistic plan”. Just like the EU’s 2030 climate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, the 2040 climate goal reflects a strong ambition to significantly reduce emissions in the EU. But while the ambitions are clear, it is not as clear how the plan will be translated into national policies and investments, especially at a time when many other concerns are competing for political attention and financing.
In this webinar, we will explore the implementation of the 2040 climate target. How will the EU’s climate and energy governance framework help deliver the 2040 objective? How far is the EU from meeting its existing 2030 targets? And how is the current energy crisis, deregulation efforts, and the rise of far-right parties, shaping the future of EU climate policy?
The webinar will start with a presentation by Federico Mascolo, Climate Policy Coordinator at Climate Action Network Europe (CAN Europe). CAN Europe is one of Europe’s leading NGO coalitions fighting the climate crisis, with more than 200 member organisations in 40 European countries. Federico’s presentation will focus on how the EUplans to achieve its 2040 climate target and on the political and practical challenges of turning ambitions into action. For example, while the EU is considering higher renewable energy targets to support its 2040 climate goal, there are multiple concerns amongst the EU member states about how to finance the transition while maintaining affordable energy prices in their country.
The presentation will be followed by a 25-minute Q&A session, where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion. In the final part of the webinar, DEO’s education team will present six new debate concepts on EU climate politics developed through an Erasmus+ project in collaboration with University College Cork and Europahuis Ryckevelde.
